SOLD – 1989 Tudor “Big Block” Chrono Time Ref. 79160

Out of stock

The Tudor “Big Block” Chrono-Time reference 79160 from 1989. This example features its original acrylic tachymetre bezel correct for this reference. In the late 80’s the 79100 series replaced the earlier 9400 series that was introduced in the mid-70s but still retained most of the same specifications and design elements such as the 7750 movement and plexiglass. This particular watch is an early example of the reference 79160. The dial features faceted batons and the date aperture with the painted surround. These Tudor “Big Block” watches may take design inspiration from its more famous sibling the Daytona, however it won the race to feature an automatic chronograph movement. The “Big Block” housed the automatic Valjoux 7750 movements from 1976 onwards whereas the Daytona only introduced the automatic Zenith El Primero base movement over a decade later in 1988.

This example remains in excellent original condition. The case appears unpolished with some light surface scratches. The bezel, dial and hands are all original. The tritium luminous appears original and matching with the hands. The watch features a Rolex triplock crown and screw down pushers.  The 78360 bracelet has the correct 589 end links specific for this model. The clasp appears to have been replaced at some stage with a Rolex clasp. The bracelet is tight with light scratches and wear to the clasp.

The overall condition of this watch is what makes this piece stand out. It is an excellent example of an increasingly sought after vintage watch and still at great value when compared to a vintage Daytona.
